Lincoln Road

Transportation Hub

Location and Task

Located on Lincoln Rd. in Miami, the goal of this project was to create a large transportation hub that not only filled its programmatic requirements, but also provide large amounts of shaded areas and green space to make it a significantly more pleasant area to walk.

This proposal called for extending the walkable Lincoln Rd. another block to our site by retaking a portion of the street for pedestrians and adding 2 major stops for buses and a light rail train.

Influences of Green

The ribbed structure allows the ocean breeze to enter unhindered into the building while providing shade from the harsh South Florida sun. They also act as an array for solar panels that will easily generate enough green energy to not only power the hub, but also the buildings around it. And using the large extrusions from the base allow for rain water storage.

Change

Since this project is on Miami Beach, we have to be mindful of how the area will change in the future. At a basic level we first looked at how the suns position affects the site both in lighting and weather. While of course thinking of the next hurricane or storm to roll through.

But later we delved into what the site might look like if, and when, sea levels do rise since we are so close to the ocean at this site. Which is already notorious with being one of the first casualties dealing with sea level rise. And with that, we designed it to have most of the program above the ground so that way the structure could be used for other programs later on.
