The Challenge

FIU and the Bauhaus Institute formed a partnership of education and would build a small space for visiting professors and students to live, work, and entertain in. With the goal in mind to replicate the Bauhaus in modern form. My strategy would be one that looks back at the previous school as a template, but to also push it towards the future of design.

The Bauhaus had many noteworthy designers from the time period including Mies van der Rohe who coined the phrase 'Less is more'. So for my project I used that methodology to the extreme and looked for what is truly necessary in a wall. Using computer algorithms and digital fabrication we can create highly efficient structural systems to use as little material as possible

Program

Using an existing building structure, the school would be the foundation for a center for living, learning, entertaining, and producing. A drastic turn from the original Bauhaus ideas of refusing to look at the past, this project revives the past while still pushing forward. And keeping with some of the original Bauhaus thinking, the same principles of trying to reduce costs  of the school with work that is produced there. This will allow a population that has been forgotten by development an opportunity to learn from some of the greatest design minds today and to work on new work no one else has.
